Themes are a great way to tie in all the elements of your wedding and make it look professional. Setting a theme for your wedding day will not only make it look stunning, the decision-making process will be a whole lot easier too.

Old-world
The most important thing for this theme is your venue - a formal, old-fashioned manor suits it best. For a smaller gathering, an intimate restaurant with the right decorations could work. Anywhere with bluestone driveways or stonewalls will create the right ambience.

Chandeliers and cast-iron candelabras will also set the mood. Position small floral arrangements under the candelabras for an extravagant table decoration.

Brides should wear a full or A-line gown but not a satin slim-line gown, as it is too modern. Lace gowns, or gowns with lace applique and beading will also suit this theme.

Choose a 1920s-inspired party dress in tea rose or latte for your bridesmaids. Diamante encrusted buckles on shoes are also a nice touch. Hair fascinators with ostrich features and face netting will complement the look.

A string quartet will add an air of sophistication at the beginning of the night as your guests are arriving. Then step up the pace with a jazz or cover band later on.

Classic cars are an obvious choice for transport. Rolls Royce, Jaguar and Chevrolet are favourites for classic weddings.

Oriental
Choose one or two colours to help emphasise your theme. Red and yellow are traditional Asian colours, and black and gold also work well with this theme.

When it comes to flowers, Singapore orchids work well but might need to be imported. Oriental lilies have a lovely aroma and are striking. Orchids are beautiful and simple table centrepieces and lilies work well in bouquets.

For the invitations, gold on red or black stands out. If you have chosen a colour theme, incorporate this into your invitations. There are a number of Asian designs you can include as well, such as Chinese dragons.

For a garden wedding, hang colourful Chinese lanterns in trees – these should look lovely when lit as the sun goes down and can be purchased cheaply from most Asian supermarkets.

For a fun touch, have bowls of fortune cookies on each table – it’s a sure-fire way to get your guests chatting to each other. Floating lotus flowers in bowls of water on each table is also a nice touch.

Paper parasols in oriental prints or colours will really enhance the aesthetics of your wedding. They look great in photos, especially if each member of the bridal party carries one. They’re also a very functional and beautiful way to keep the sun off your face.

An Asian-inspired menu is an obvious choice for this theme. Try sushi and rice paper rolls for entree and Peking duck for a main dish. Chinese tea is also a nice touch.

Winter theme
A white colour theme is perfect for a winter wedding. White flowers are a must, including beautiful white roses and lilies. A larger bouquet is well-suited to a winter wedding, as it has a more formal, classic look.

A white full gown looks fantastic in winter and it’s a little warmer. But if you desperately want to wear a slim gown you can always team it with a faux fur stole and long gloves.

Keep bridesmaids’ dresses below the knee and incorporate straps or capped sleeves if possible. If you really want your bridesmaids to wear strapless dresses, do them a favour by providing them with matching stoles or faux fur shrugs.

White invitations with black or silver text are a classic idea. A silver snowflake design on the front of the invitation is a nice touch and will tie in well with the theme.

For an unusual decoration at the reception, go for an ice-sculpture as the centrepiece for the bridal table. Have a heart-shaped design, or a personalised sculpture with your names and the date of you wedding engraved in the ice.

Make sure everyone feels cosy at the reception by serving hot food and drinks. Offer your guests hot chocolate as well as tea and coffee after the meal. Perhaps go for a hot dessert like sticky date pudding or chocolate souffle.

Candles create a romantic ambience and the flame will give the impression of a warm atmosphere.
Choose white or silver candles to go with this theme.
